WHF/WHFF Partner Series: GAO's Reports on COVID-19 Lending to Small Businesses

 

The Small Business Administration provided hundreds of billions in forgivable loans, low-interest loans, and grants to support small businesses affected by COVID-19 through the Paycheck Protection Program and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. Specialists from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) will present and discuss their recent work examining the agency’s implementation of these programs.

Speaker Bios

Paige Smith is an Assistant Director with GAO’s Financial Markets and Community Investment team in its Atlanta field office. Her work focuses on SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program, other small business issues, and community development and housing programs. She holds a bachelor’s degree and Master of Business Administration degree from Vanderbilt University. 

Marshall Hamlett is an Assistant Director with GAO’s Financial Markets and Community Investment team in its Atlanta field office. His work focuses on economic development programs, small business contracting programs, and SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University and Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Daniel Newman is a Senior Analyst with GAO on the same team in its Atlanta field office. His recent oversight work has focused on various SBA emergency lending programs including the Paycheck Protection Program and the agency’s response to the 2017 hurricanes. He holds a bachelor’s and a Master in Public Administration degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Weifei Zheng is a Senior Analyst with GAO on the same team in its Atlanta field office. Her recent oversight work has focused on lending to small businesses during the pandemic and consumer reporting agencies.  She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Ohio State University and a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh.
